This decorative silver cigarette case has a good silver gauge, testimony of its quality. The slightly curved square-shaped body profusely engraved with foliate scrolls. The front with vacant reserve, the sloping sides engraved with fluted decorations. The push button to the front opening to reveal agGilt interior complete with the original elastic band ( a little loose) for holding in the cigarettes. Inner case hallmarked on both sides.

This rare and exquisite Arts & Crafts silver vesta case is dated Birmingham 1904 and was made by William Hair Haseler* who, in partnership with Liberty, launched the Cymric silver line and was responsible for making many of Archibald Knox's designs. Of curved rectangular form, the spot-hammered body with stylised berries, reflecting Knox's classic style which often emcompasses the Arts & Craft and the Art Nouveau movement.

Five years later, Arthur Lasenby Liberty started a small shop on the corner of Regent Street in London. Specialising in exotic goods from Japan and the Far East, his business thrived and he became the leading merchant Liberty. During the 1890s, Liberty formed relationships with many leading English designers. In 1898, Liberty and Haseler created a formal partnership to launch the Cymric silver line under the title “Liberty and Co. (Cymric) Ltd.” using free lance designers. One of those designers, Archibald Knox, began designing for Liberty in 1899. He focused on the new Celtic design work for the Cymric range. Haseler was responsible for making many of Knox’s designs.

This is a divine 19th Century French *niello silver vesta case. The front decorated with a pair of birds perched on a branch within leafy decorations. The cartouche engraved and dated 1885. The back with a single bird amongst flowering branches. The sprung hinged cover opening to reveal a gilt interior and a full and crisp set of hallmarks.

Aesthetic movement silver vesta cases are very scarce and this an exquisite example by a very collectable silversmith. The front engraved with two perched owls in a moonlight setting and a crane catching a fish in a pond amongst lily pads. The back with flying ducks amongst reeds, all typical motifs of this movement.

It is of traditional rounded rectangular form with foliate scroll decorations all over. The sovereign part with attached suspension ring and push-button mechanism opening to reveal a gilt interior with sprung platform and horseshoe surround. The sprung hinged vesta case with initialled medallion and striker to the base.
